The exhaustion of "fossil fuels" and "food for all" are among the major concerns of our time. In this context, the search for renewable energy and alternatives to petrochemicals without competing with food becomes a priority. The use of microorganisms such as bacteria, algae or fungi for the production of biofuels (bio-lipids) and high value-added lipid derivatives from renewable resources is actually promising.

The BIMLip team "Integrative Biology of Lipid Metabolism" undertakes a fundamental approach to systemic biology and genetic engineering of lipid metabolism of oleaginous yeasts and in particular Yarrowia lipolytica. The team exploits the knowledge acquired for applications in biofuels, biolipids, bioplastics and for white chemistry. It also uses the gene expression and amplification systems it has developed for the production of enzymes for biotechnological and medical use.

The work of the BIMLip team revolves around 3 major axes:


Axis 1:  Lipids metabolism

This first axis aims to decipher the lipid metabolism based on an integrative biology approach by focusing on the regulatory mechanisms, the analysis of enzymes involved in the transport, storage and activation of fatty acids in the cell.

This axis also integrates the study of the enzymes involved in the use of sugar transport and storage and the importance of competition between the carbon utilization pathways in Y. lipolytica.

Axis 2:  Synthetic Biology

The second axis focuses on synthetic biology, through the development of a regulatory inference network and a metabolic model for Y. lipolytica. In parallel, we are developing a set of powerful cloning and genomic editing tools (CRISPR / Cas9, Goldengate, Gateway), as well as new inducible synthetic promoters whose strength is flexible for a fine control of gene expression.




Axis 3:  Valorization

The third axis focuses on the valorization of our research, in order to develop efficient cell factories for the production of enzymes, lipids, unusual lipid derivatives and for the production of Chassies strains for the production of compounds with high added value, exploiting the knowledge acquired on lipid metabolism and in the fields of synthetic biology.
