Currently a 3rd year student at the engineer school AgroParisTech, I am specializing in biotechnologies, and especially microbiology, systemic and synthetic biology. I joined SyBER for my final 6 months internship (from 01/03/2022 to 31/08/2022) to develop microbial consortia of Bacillus subtilis. My project is based on division of labor, aiming to address the growth decline observed when a whole heterologous pathway is implemented in a strain. The idea is to split the metabolic pathway of interest into several strains of the workhorse Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and to cocultivate them. The first part of my project is to build stable consortia based on cross-feeding for amino acids and optimize them by directed evolution. In a second time, I will implement in these consortia a pathway of interest and assess the efficiency of the division of labor. This proof of concept is applied to the degradation of lignocellulose but can be easily reuse for any other pathway of interest thanks to the modular landing platform developed in parallel.

I can count on Anne-Gaëlle Planson (CR), Matthieu Jules (PR) and Nathalie Laforge (PhD) to help me in this fascinating project that will enrich the competences I acquired previously both in Micalis (team Prokaryotic Cell Development [ProCeD], Rut Carballido-Lopez) and Institut Pasteur (team Plasticity of Bacterial Genome [PGB], Didier Mazel).
