New Director for the Micalis Institute

The Micalis Institute entered a new phase in its governance on 1 January 2026 with the appointment of Matthieu Jules as head of the unit. He succeeds Philippe Noirot, whose term came to an end.

Philippe Noirot had led the unit since 2021. During his tenure, the Micalis Institute strengthened its scientific activities, reinforced its institutional partnerships, and launched several structuring projects. He played a key role in shaping the unit’s scientific organisation through the creation and development of its two transversal research axes, Alibiote (Food, Fermented Food and Microbiota) and FAMe (Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance), which now help to bring research efforts together and enhance the coherence of the approaches pursued within the institute.

Matthieu Jules is a professor of systems biology and synthetic biology at AgroParisTech and has led the SyBER team at Micalis since 2020. This team develops integrated systems biology and synthetic biology approaches to understand, design and reprogram bacteria and biological systems, with the aim of controlling gene expression and creating new cellular functions. After graduating from INSA Toulouse, he undertook postdoctoral research at the Institut Pasteur before joining INRAE in 2007. He obtained his habilitation to supervise research in 2016 and was appointed professor at AgroParisTech in 2017. He is also involved in scientific evaluation, teaching and academic governance at Université Paris-Saclay and AgroParisTech.
